Practice Areas: Family Practice, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Internal Medicine are given priority, but there is no restriction on any specialty

Specialists: Yes; Specialists will only be considered for facilities in MUA's and MUP's

Application Review: Applications are accepted commencing on 9/1 each year. New Mexico accepts applications continuously until all 30 Waivers have been filled. The New Mexico J-1 Waiver Program is a first come first serve program.  The New Mexico Department of Health does not reserve J-1 Waiver slots.

Notes: Generally, 2 to 3 applications are reserved for the Department Secretary’s discretionary targeting of special priority needs. The J-1 physician cannot be the sole practitioner at the facility. To use a flex spot, physicians must be licensed by the state of New Mexico, the Facility must provide a substantial amount of medical care to patients who reside in HPSAs, MUA/Ps, and that the services are needed.
